Today was definitely a day to stay in and make a pie, if you ask me!
I decided to pick up a carton of strawberries to go with the rhubarb I bought at the Farmer's Market this morning, and putzed around making a lattice top. As you can see, the pie overflowed dramatically, but that's okay -- that's what cookie sheets are for, right?
This is the first time in my adult life that I've made a lattice top -- can you believe it? I've made so many pies over the years, and have never played much with my pastry, until now! Wee! Today was also the first day I had relative success making a whole-wheat crust that wasn't crumbly or brittle when rolling out. The trick? Adding TWICE as much water as the white-flour recipe called for, if you can believe it! Wholegrain flours do tend to suck up moisture, but I wasn't expecting anything that dramatic!?
I also made dinner:
"Spicoli Burgers," from Eat, Drink, and be Vegan, on homemade buns with roasted red pepper hummus, avocado, tomato, and lettuce. Salad and sweet potato fries on the side. I made the burgers small in hopes that I'd save room for pie . . . but no! Pie will have to wait until later. Part of me is a little bit sad about this, since I really want to eat a piece of pie, but part of me is okay with this -- I get to admire it a little bit longer. :)

Oh. Hell. Yes.
That pie is so beautiful! You know, I was just thinking that I have never made a fancy crust top either - then again, I just made my first pie last year. You've inspired me!
I like the way that overflow pie looks! It's beautiful!
