Yes, I'm a sucker for memes. Liz tagged me for Seven Random Things. Here I go:
1. I have a completely irrational fear of city squirrels. They creeeeeeeep me out when they come too close! They are just weird and twitchy and too friendly for my liking. Ish. (This is coming from a girl who once held a dozen slugs in her hand. So I'm not easily creeped out or anything.) I do like the sweet, small red squirrels that live in northern MN, however -- they are cute, and also know how to maintain a safe distance. :)
2. I am obsessed with ginger. Like, obsessed. Ginger candy, ginger cookies, ginger tea, ginger-based soups, ginger ice cream, etc. If you catch me knawing on a hunk of fresh ginger, promise me you'll slap me upside the head!
3. I have had three favorite colors in my life. When I was small, I liked pink. Somewhere around middle school, my favorite color abruptly switched to blue. Blue persisted until a couple of years ago, when it slowly morphed into green. Strange!
4. I took a dozen years of piano lessons growing up, but have barely played since high school. In fact, I struggle reading bass clef these days! Travesty! I hope to someday own a piano, and can get back to playing.
5. I love driving, I like cars, but I hated owning one. So I donated my car a couple of years ago, and haven't looked back. I hope a LONG time passes before I have to own a car again!
6. I haven't worn makeup in over two years. A couple of weeks ago, I went through my medicine cabinet and finally threw it all away!! It was very liberating. :)
7. I have a weakness for soft, fuzzy, cute pajamas. Especially pajamas with stripes, polka-dots, or critters of any sort. (Except squirrels, obviously -- refer back to #1.)
Hope that was random enough!

the freezer meme
What's in my freezer?

Black beans, chickpeas, homemade marinara (hiding in back,) leftover soup, leftover chana dal, the bowl for my ice cream maker, a couple of Matthew's burritos, edamame, apple butter, minced fresh lemongrass, chipotles in adobo sauce, homemade waffles, a little rhubarb, a package of wonton wrappers, a blend of flours and flax for bread making, leftover frosting from my coteacher's birthday cake,, a box of very old baking soda, and

ice packs, breadcrumbs, ground flaxseeds, green peas, yeast, and the "fat can." (I haven't been using the "fat can," so I actually threw it out right after I took this picture. I just dump my leftover hashbrown-frying fat in the garbage these days.)
So . . . what's in your freezer?

random mishmosh
The following consists of a few things I felt like posting. I apologize, in advance, for the randomness!
First, Oliver has been missing you all, since his badass feline self has not made an appearance here lately. He's been extra cute these days, just 'cause he misses having his picture taken. See?

Second, one of my all-time favorite fruits:

Gold kiwi! Find them and eat them, if you've never tried them. They are super-sweet, almost honey-like in their fruity/floralness, with none of the acidity of green kiwi. Expensive, but a lovely treat.
Third, a meme stolen from Syn. (Who doesn't love a good meme every now and then?)
1) Last movie you saw in the movie theatre
Body of War
2) What book are you reading?
I'm actually in-between books. I just finished reading A Framework for Understanding Poverty by Ruby K. Payne, and I haven't decided what's on the nightstand next!
3) Favorite board game?
Scrabble
4) Favorite Magazine?
Eating Well
5)Favorite Smell?
A three-way tie: baking things (bread, muffins, cookies, etc.), green things (nature, trees, etc.,) and freshly-showered boyfriend

10) Future childs name?
Don't know
11) Finish this statement... If I had a lot of money I would...
pay off my student loans, travel, start saving for retirement, and donate a helluva lot more to organizations that need it than I'm able to do right now.
12) Do you Drive fast?
Not really, when I drive, which is rare. (I don't have a car!)
13) Do you sleep with a stuffed animal?
I did when I was little, but not any more.
14) Storms... cool or scarey
supercool
15) What was your first car?
1993 Chevy Blazer S10

Coffee, first thing in the morning, water throughout the day, and herbal tea before bed.
17) Do you eat the stems on broccoli?
Depends.
18)If you could die your hair any other color.. what would it be?

A lot of cat fur fluffballs, and a flat plastic box of wrapping paper and other gift-giving supplies.
23) Would you like to be born again as yourself?
Uuuh . . . meaning, would I like a second try at my life? Probably not.
24) Morning person or night owl?
Both, depending on the day.
25)Over easy or sunny side up
Poached, thank you very much!
26)Favorite place to relax...

survey
1. What were you doing 10 years ago? In 1998?
Ah . . . I was a freshman at the University of Minnesota, studying psychology, French, and singing in the choir. Also, right around this time, I started a student office worker job at the College of Pharmacy. Big fun, let me tell you!
What were you doing 1 year ago?
Working retail (taking a break from teaching,) poor as dirt, and probably trying very hard to come up with something fun to do that was also free! Also, cooking and baking, I'm sure.
2. Five favorite snacks?
Yogurt, chips and salsa, fruit, muffins/cookies/sweets, popcorn, cheese and crackers (or just cheese!)
3. Five favorite toys?
Hm . . . my MAC santoku, my Bamix, my computer, my bike, and my planner.
4. What I like doing:
Cooking, baking, walking, hiking, biking, travelling, teaching, watching movies, reading, drinking coffee and/or tea, going to the library, going to museums, seeing live/local music, going to plays/theatre, hanging out with friends, going out to eat, having people over for dinner, shopping (but not at malls!), singing,
5. My bad habits:
Overthinking/overplanning, getting ahead of myself, picking at my cuticles (but I used to be a nail biter -- I think this is a step up!), not allowing myself to leave things unfinished, letting the dishes pile up in the sink, not flossing,
So, if you haven't done this survey yet, consider yourself tagged. (And let me know if you've done it, so I can read your answers!)

27 questions
Bazu and Daiku answered the questions to this survey recently, and, like Bazu, I'm a sucker for these, too! Here I go . . .
1. Favorite non-dairy milk?
Soy for coffee, rice for cereal. Since I just bought a soymilk maker, however, that's been the milk of choice lately. I can't wait to try out almond and hazelnut milks, though!
2. What are the top 3 dishes/recipes you are planning to cook?
Chili and cornbread, sushi, and probably eggs and hashbrowns.
3. Topping of choice for popcorn?
Fine-grain sea salt, and nothing else!
4. Most disastrous recipe/meal failure?
I have had some pretty disastrous adventures in the land of homemade bread-baking.
5. Favorite pickled item?
Oooh . . . I do love pickles (i.e. cucumbers,) but I think my favorite pickled item is pickled ginger.
6. How do you organize your recipes?
I organize recipes I clip out of magazines and print off the internet in five big binders, sorted by category and then alphabetized. I also have a computer program called "notebook" that I use to organize the rest of my recipes -- no more recipe box, thank you very much!
7. Compost, trash, or garbage disposal?
I live in an apartment, so I'm stuck with trash only. Someday I will have a fabulous composting system at the back of my gigantic garden, however!
8. If you were stranded on an island and could only bring 3 foods...what would they be (don't worry about how you'll cook them)?
Bread, cheese, and peaches.
9. Fondest food memory from your childhood?
Cutting out and decorating Christmas cookies, probably.
10. Favorite vegan ice cream?
Soy Delicious cookie avalanche!
11. Most loved kitchen appliance?
Hmm. Tough one. It might be my Bamix!
12. Spice/herb you would die without?
Fresh basil. (Cilantro, too!)
13. Cookbook you have owned for the longest time?
The basic Betty Crocker big red cookbook.
14. Favorite flavor of jam/jelly?
A tie -- apricot and strawberry.
15. Favorite vegan recipe to serve to an omni friend?
Tempeh bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado, and vegenaise on wholegrain toast, with sweet potato fries and watermelon!
16. Seitan, tofu, or tempeh?
TOFU.
17. Favorite meal to cook (or time of day to cook)?
I like to spend a whole day cooking and prepping on the weekend -- that day usually ends up being Sunday afternoon/evening.
18. What is sitting on top of your refrigerator?
My large cooling grate, unpopped popcorn, half a bag of blue corn tortilla chips, my lunchbag, and a package of cardboard to-go coffee cups (Dan has a habit of losing/forgetting to return my travel coffee mugs!)
19. Name 3 items in your freezer without looking.
Active dry yeast, tons of leftovers, and coffee ice cream.
20. What's on your grocery list?

22. Name a recipe you'd love to veganize, but haven't yet.

23. Food blog you read the most.
Oh, I read them all . . . ! I'm not the best commenter, however.
24. Favorite vegan candy/chocolate?
A tie: Dots and Sweedish Fish (the multicolored kind!)
25. Most extravagant food item purchased lately?
Hm. Four boxes of Yogi tea, because it was on sale?
26. Veganaise or Nayonaise?

I've been tagged!
Judy tagged me. Here goes! (I'm supposed to come up with an adjective that described me for each letter of my name. Tricky . . . )
C = creative (We all express our creativity in different ways. My creative outlets are food, obviously, and also, music and writing.)
A = active (I'm not an athlete or anything . . . I just can't sit still. Type A, always busy doing something or on the go. It's very, very good that I'm dating a very low-key, self-described "lazy guy." He makes me slow down!)
T = thinker (I like to think things through a lot, and talk about them with other people. Sometimes I overthink things, too.)
H = happy (I feel like I'm a reasonably happy person -- I have a lot to be thankful for!)
E = earnest (I am an honest, somewhat serious person. I tend to be quite reserved, but an observer. What you see is what you get!)
R = responsible (Goes along with the active and thinker adjectives -- I'm generally on top of my life, and get stuff done.)
I = intense (I just have a lot of energy that tends to ooze out of my pores. People sense this when they first meet me, and they either really like it, or really don't.)
N = naive (In the good sense of the word -- I tend to assume positive intent, and hope I am reasonably compassionate.)
E = even (I tend to be pretty even-keel most of the time, which is strange, because when I was young, I was very emotional. All those years of teaching must have taught me to just roll with it!)
Now, I'm supposed to tag as many people as there are letters in my name. Since there are nine letters in my name, consider yourself tagged, if you haven't been already!
Segue . . .
My two trips to vegetarian restaurants this weekend have fallen way short of my expectations. Dan and I went to Evergreen, a local Taiwanese restaurant that specializes in mock meats, and I was sorely disappointed. My curried noodles were greasy, and contained a whole plethora of mock meats, which I was not expecting . . . I don't really care for mock meats, and I was expecting a plethora of vegetables, because I thought that was what the menu said. Dan said his curried mock duck was good, although it needed soy sauce and chilis. We'll try it again -- next time, I'll just stick with the tofu. :)
I was also supposed to go to Hard Times with Courtney tonight, but she had to cancel, because she has a stress fracture in her right leg! Poor Courtney! (Some of you may receive regular comments from Courtney on your blog, although she does not have her own blog.) We'll reschedule.
I'm currently working on a big batch of marinara, and also some coconut rice pudding, so I'll take pictures and post later this week. :) Until then!

"health-conscious" = no surprise here (but fun!)
I got this off of Nikki's blog. Check it out! (P.S. I don't eat fish, obviously.)
You scored as health-conscious vegetarian. You are a health-conscious vegetarian! This means that either your motivation for going veg was/is for health reasons, or if not, you have simply become much more health-conscious after being veg. You are always questioning what you eat on the basis of its healthfullness and naturalness. You might be a "pesco-vegetarian" (fish eating), if you believe that fish flesh is healthy (it's not!). Either way, vegetarianism is a part of your quest for health! More on www.goveg.com

my top 5
So, I got "tagged" a few days ago, and will now post my top 5 foods of all time (at least for now!):
Avocado
Mango
Garlic
Garden fresh tomatoes
Pumpkin pie
I'm not going to tag anyone, because I think you've all done it already! If you want to tag yourself, however, go right ahead -- I'd love to read about your top 5!
(If my list were to continue, it would include pasta, brie cheese, coffee, fresh herbs of all kinds, sweet potatoes/yams, ice cream (both soy and dairy), black beans, artichokes, fresh mozzarella cheese, really good bread, berries, dried cherries, almonds, couscous, barbecued tofu, tempeh bacon, spinach, mushrooms, potatoes, fennel, corn (on the cob, popcorn, and all things made with cornmeal), herbal tea, chocolate, pecans, yogurt, falafel, peanut butter, and salt and vinegar potato chips.)
