the power of produce

I am having the greatest breakfast this morning: homemade granola with soy milk, topped with fresh, local, organic blueberries! Yum. These blueberries are SO fantastic!

In other food news . . .

~ I finally, finally, finally have a clean kitchen as of last night, so I can begin messing it up again tonight. I hope to make an awesome dinner! What it will be, we'll see, however.

~ I'm thinking about buying a rice cooker sometime in the near future. I have a complete inability to consistently cook rice well on the stovetop, and the family I nanny for has a rice cooker and I sort of love it. ;-) Anyone else out there have feelings about a rice cooker, one way or the other?

~ I'm thinking about adding the directions for making cold-pressed coffee to my cookbook, since I seem to have perfected the technique. Any thoughts?

~ I really hope to devote a lot of time this coming weekend to working on the cookbook -- recipe testing, writing, editing, etc. Here's hoping the weather cooperates! I'm tired of temps in the high 90s, because then all I want to do is sit around and try not to sweat too much.

Great breakfast! Sometimes realatively simple meals are some of the best. As for a clean kitchen...that's where I should be right now. Mine's a bit of a mess after the weekend.
I have never used a rice cooker, nor do I know anyone who has one so I can't help you there. I would be curious to see what kind of feedback you get. Might be worth investigating.

Yummy breakfast. I had the other half of my Chipotle burrito - unusual breakfast choice, but it worked.

About the rice cooker...Ryan and I were just talking about the same thing. I'd be interested in what others have to say. It might be worth it to swing by Goodwill and check out their stock - I found a great juicer there for $5!

I have always wanted a rice cooker and a pressure cooker. Get one. I've seen them at the conventional supermarkets and Target for about 20 bucks.

I know people who have rice cookers who say they are not really worth it, but some of them work as veggie steamers, which would be worth it to me! My sister got one as a wedding gift a few years ago, and she never uses it to make rice but uses it quite often as a vegetable steamer. If you eat a lot of rice, though, I would think it would be worth it. I have never used one, though, so I am sorry I cannot be more help!

I have not cooked much in the past few weeks either--I really hope it cools off soon because I miss it! Salads are great, but sometimes you just want to cook a meal.

Thumbs up on a rice cooker! I got a Black and Decker one with a flavor screen or something for herbs. It steams veggies and/or makes rice.

Why is a rice cooker great?

1. Plug it and leave it. No rice sticking to the pan or boiling over.

2. While it cooks on the counter, it doesn't take up a burner on your stove.

3. In the summer months, it heats up the house way less than using a stove.

4. It automatically shuts off, so if you fall asleep...no worries.

I bet I could come up with 10 reasons, but that is probably enough.

definitely add the cold pressed coffee to the cookbook!

I have never considered a rice cooker.. for some reason, rice is very easy for me to cook. When I do basmati (white), I just add 1 cup rice to 1.5 cups water.. bring to a boil for a minute, then cover it and turn the heat off. In 20 minutes the rice is perfect. Same with brown rice, but I add 2 cups water to 1 cup rice. boil for 2 minutes and turn the heat to low and wait for 40 mins.

I picked up a rice maker at goodwill several years ago. I seriously love it. Mine is a zorushi, it is a basic click to cook button style. I know a gal who also has a porridge button on hers.

I have a Cuisinart rice/convection steamer and I love it. I steam rice- makes brown rice fluffy! and you can steam veggies in a tray above. It is kinda bulky, but I love it. You turn it on and ignore it, it has a digital timer. I got it at a discount place for half price.
